all about drinks

A beverage is any beverage, hot or cold, that quenches thirst, refreshes, or stimulates. The body requires fluids to help regulate bodily processes and maintain good health. The body loses a large amount of water through perspiration and must be replenished.

There are three main classes of beverages:-

1. Refreshing drinks. These quench thirst and include all fruit juices, cordials, and sparkling water. All soft drinks contain carbohydrates in the form of sugar, while those made from fresh fruit also contain vitamin C and mineral salt.

2. Nutritional drinks. These drinks can be used as food when you are hungry. In fact, they are used as food for the young, the sick and the elderly who cannot eat solid food. All drinks containing milk are included and provide nutrition to the body in the form of vitamins, mineral salts, proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

3. Stimulating drinks. These contain very little food value, except for a small amount of carbohydrate in the form of sugar, if sugar has been added. These include tea and coffee that contain stimulating substances that young children should not drink in excess.

Nutritional drinks:-

Milk is one of the most important foods for everyone, especially the very young, growing children, pregnant women and the elderly. It contains proteins and mineral salts that are very necessary for growth. Milk is rich in a mineral salt called calcium, which is necessary to build strong bones and teeth. Milk also contains vitamins, carbohydrates, and fats, making it good for young and growing children.

There are many types of milk, but the most used is cow’s milk, although milk from other animals is also used, such as goat’s milk and buffalo milk.

Cow’s milk can be bought as;-

1. Fresh milk.
2. Condensed milk: Some of the water in the milk was evaporated, sugar was added, and then the milk was canned.
3. Evaporated milk: part of the water in the milk has been evaporated before the milk is packaged.
4. Powdered milk: all the water in the milk has evaporated, leaving only the powdered solids.

Clean milk can only be obtained from clean and healthy cows, raised in a clean and well-cared-for environment and milked under very hygienic conditions. Milk is a complete food for babies but it is also a very good breeding ground for germs. Germs grow and multiply very quickly in milk. Many of the bacteria found in milk are harmless but cause milk to turn sour.

Sometimes milk contains germs that spread disease. These disease germs can enter the milk from the cow’s body, from flies, dirty utensils, dirty hands, and airborne dust. That is why it is very important that the milk is always kept very clean and covered at all times.

To preserve the milk:-

1. Scald all fresh milk to kill germs. To scald milk, bring it quickly to a boil, boil for three minutes, and then cool rapidly. Blanching will make the milk keep better.
2. Keep the milk in clean containers, cover it with a clean muslin and keep it in a cool place, either in the refrigerator or in a clay pot with cold water.
3. Never leave condensed milk in the open can. Always empty the contents into clean, dry containers and keep the milk covered to prevent the entry of dust and germs.
4. Always empty and clean all milk containers before refilling with fresh milk. Never add fresh milk to old milk.

To reconstitute milk:-

2 tablespoons of milk powder

1 pint of water

1. Measure the water into a mixing container.
2. Sprinkle milk powder over the water.
3. Beat with a rotary beater or a fork until the milk is lump free.

Cocoa is not only a stimulating drink but also a nutritious drink. It contains starch and fat and when made with milk and sugar it contains a lot of food value. Cocoa is made from cocoa beans, the seeds of the cocoa pods which are the fruit of the cocoa tree which is grown in many parts of tropical Africa, South America and the West Indies, Ceylon and Java. Cocoa beans are roasted and then ground. Next, the cocoa fat called cocoa butter is removed, after which the cocoa is ground further and sifted to a very fine powder. The presence of starch in cocoa makes it necessary to boil the drink if a thicker, smoother drink is desired.

Tea is made from the dried young shoots or leaves of the tea bush that grows well on the hillsides of India and Ceylon, Malaya, China and Japan.

There are two types of tea:-

1. Green tea or Chinese tea is made from unfermented leaves, which is drunk very weak and without sugar.
2. Ceylon tea is made from fermented leaves, which is usually served in the afternoon with or without milk and sugar. The recipe given is for making this type of tea.

The best quality tea has only the buds of the bush that are tightly curled when dried and contain no stem, flower, or dust. The tea contains a stimulating tannin that makes it bitter if it has been brewed too long. It has practically no food value except for the food value of the milk and the sugar that has been added to it.

Rules for making tea:-

1. Earthenware or porcelain teapots make the best tea.
2. Use only freshly drawn water that has reached the boiling point.
3. Heat the kettle well by boiling it with boiling water.

Coffee is made from roasted coffee beans that grow in many parts of South America, the West Indies, Africa, Java, and the volcanic islands of the Pacific. The quality of the coffee depends on the roasting of the beans and their freshness. Ground coffee does not keep well as it loses its flavor and absorbs other flavors. It’s best to buy freshly roasted and ground coffee in small batches and store it in airtight bottles. Coffee is more stimulating than tea, it contains stimulating caffeine and is like tea and has no food value in itself.

1. Use the correct amount of freshly ground coffee.

3. Heat the carafe thoroughly before using it to make coffee.
4. Use boiling water to make coffee, but never boil coffee.
5. Strain the coffee into a hot pot as soon as it has brewed long enough.
6. Coffee must be served with milk. One-third to one-half cup of milk is added to coffee to make café con leche. It is best if the milk is hot. Cold milk will make the coffee too cold.
