Are you crazy if you use vines?

Creeper shoes, also known as brothel creepers or plain creepers, are an acquired taste. But not. The truth is that most of the population would probably not wear these shoes. They are big, bulky and look like wedge slippers. They are often not very professionally experienced and can look almost hideous to the untrained eye. The truth of the matter is that most members of the human species would not be the least bit interested in vines.

However, there is a small subset of people who love these shoes. This segment of the population lives its life according to different rules. This subculture is dark and listens to alternative music, be it gothic, punk, industrial or ethereal. Its members wear dark clothes, appreciate dark art, and read dark literature. Some of them have more than a couple of vines in their closets.

How did vines become popular even in this small town? Legend has it that soldiers stationed in Africa during World War II began wearing these shoes. From there they moved to London where they became very popular in the 1970s. Due to their unique look, subcultures like the ones above caught on. They eventually gained popularity in the US.

Alternative people can wear Creepers, but what if you’re a regular John or Jane Doe and want to venture out and do something rebellious? You want to be unique. Do you want people to fawn over the girl who otherwise dresses simply and wears these huge, bulky shoes? However, more important than looking good, is comfort. Are these shoes comfortable? For the most part, they are comfortable, although the degree of comfort can vary depending on the particular pair or brand. They don’t usually come in half sizes, so go a size up or down if you wear a half size.

How about the ugly factor? Are you sure these shoes will make you laugh at yourself? Believe it or not, they are not ugly. They are unique and some people will not like them. However, some of them have a professional appearance. Some of the men’s creepers look like normal dress shoes, except for the raised wedge. So, in an environment that has a corporate casual dress code, you can wear a dressier, less over the top creeper to work. You can even use some at your parents’ house without intense scrutiny.
