Do you need a passport?

A passport is an official government document that certifies the identity and citizenship of a person and allows a citizen to travel abroad and the case of a United States passport to return to the United States.

When will you need a passport?

The answer depends on the country you plan to visit. Many countries require a passport when entering their country. Additionally, a document stating proof of citizenship is always required to re-enter the United States. In some cases (Mexico, Canada, etc.), a valid driver’s license and birth certificate will suffice as proof of citizenship; however, as noted, many countries require a passport to enter their country and the US Department of State “recommends” a passport as proof of citizenship in ALL cases.

Does my child need a passport?

Yes. Anyone traveling to a country that requires a passport must have their own passport regardless of age. The US Department of State has hired additional staff to meet the demand for extraordinary passport applications from the Americas. Records are being broken as the Department is working hard to ensure that all American citizens obtain a passport in time for vacations and travel.

Regional agencies have worked over the weekend. Employees have worked overtime to meet the demand.
