Elche Spain, the cradle of the palm tree

Elche is a very old city dating back to the Stone Age. With a population of 220,000 people, it is one of the largest cities in the region and as a tourist hotspot, it is one of the crown jewels for Spain. Getting to Elche is very simple. There are many different airports that support the area, including Murcia in the south and Valencia in the north. And by far the most convenient airport is Alicante, which is located just outside Elche. If you drive towards you can take Highway 87. This highway will take you to the outskirts of Elche and beyond, to Alicante and directly to Cartagena.

Elche Costa Blanca is the home of the palm tree. There are so many palm trees in the city that it is unreal. There are protected parts throughout the city whose palm trees were originally brought to Elche by the Arabs. During the Moorish occupation of Elche, the Moors not only brought their fantastic irrigation systems to the entire area, they also managed to bring the palm tree. Among the most famous parks in the entire city is the municipal park of Elche. This park is highly influenced by the Arabs both in its layout and in its architecture. There are many different fountains scattered throughout the park and there are fantastic trails where you will see lots of wildlife, including swans.

Of course, Spain is not only the land of the sun; it is also the land of good food and great company. You will notice as you walk the streets of Elche that there are many different types of restaurants available, another matter of fact, there are so many different places where you can buy good food. One of the fanciest things you can do while in Elche is pull up a chair under the palm tree and outside a local cafe or restaurant, order a glass of red wine and a plate of tapas.
