Each year, nurse practitioners need to renew their license in order to continue practicing in their state. The state requires nurses to earn at least 20 hours of continuing education in the area in which they practice, as well as pay a license renewal fee. These hours must be taken through a provider recognized by the Board of Registered Nursing.

Some states require certain types of CEUs for Nurses courses, such as Infection Control and Identifying and Reporting Child Abuse. In Michigan, nurses are required to complete one hour of pain management education. This list is not exhaustive. Each state will have different requirements for how many hours each RN must complete.

Generally, nurse practitioners need to complete a certain number of hours each year in order to maintain their license. They can choose to take formal continuing education credits from the above bodies or to complete 30 hours of informal continuing education. Depending on their specialty, continuing education hours may include courses related to ethics, human rights, and the prevention of sexual harassment.

How Many CEUs Do Nurse Practitioners Need to Renew Their License?

Nurses who wish to renew their license are required to continue earning their certification by passing the FNP or A-GNP National Certification Examination. If they allow their certification to lapse, they will no longer be able to practice as a nurse practitioner. To regain authorization, NPs must earn specific number of CE credits, depending on the state licensing board. In California, NPs must earn at least 30 hours of CE every two years.

Continuing education requirements are different for APRNs in each state. In Virginia, NPs are required to complete eight hours of continuing education each year and pay a fee. Other states may not require evidence of continuing education, but it is becoming increasingly common for nurses to show that they have mastered continuing education in specific areas.

In Florida, RNs are required to take 24 hours of continuing education each renewal period. During each renewal period, they must earn 2.4 CEUs. An additional 12 hours are allowed for independent study. An RN must also complete 15 contact hours of CME every two years.

RNs and LPNs must also take a plan for continued competence. The rules for continuing education for nurses can be found in Chapter 216 of the Board’s rules. The rules state that each nurse must keep records of each CNE activity completed in order to maintain their license.

For APRNs with prescriptive authority, they must earn at least 15 hours of post-licensure education every two years. This requirement must be met if the nurse practitioner performs at least 640 hours of active practice. In addition, APRNs must take two semester hours of post-licensure academic education.
