Make more sales by being the opposite

Here’s something I’ve been playing with and my results have been pretty good too.

A few months ago a friend was launching a great product with lots of cash prizes for top affiliates. I knew there would be tons of affiliate competition, with each affiliate trying to outperform the others with bigger and better bonuses.

How to compete?

I decided not to.

Instead, I thought about what each affiliate’s bonus pages would look like: highly polished, elegant, professional, lots of graphics, videos, etc.

Most likely they will all start to look a lot alike, right?

So I thought … what if I did something different?

What if my page looks like something you might receive in the mail? A black and white sales letter, using the Courier typewriter font, with a very old look …

What if, instead of a highly polished professional photo of myself, I used one that I just woke up to? Or one where I just finished exercising or just finished yard work?

In other words, I saw myself as the neighbor and not as a marketer.

Taking this thought to the next level, I decided that I did not want to spend time or money creating a bond. Everyone else was doing that, so why should I?

Instead, I would give a live class. Homework would be to review the program before class. Then in class we would implement, step by step, what was in the program. And it would record everything, so that people could follow it.

In case you were wondering, it worked flawlessly. My sales were a very decent 5 figure number, and my commissions were half plus bonuses.

And one more thing: I cheated too. I had my virtual assistant lead the class for me. She learned great new skills and I spent less than 2 hours on the entire project.

Conclusion: When there is a lot of competition, it is time to stop competing directly and look for another way.

If they’re using tons of nifty graphics and videos, go for a black-and-white typewriter style from the ’80s.

If they offer bonus packages full of 5, 10, or 20 products, you don’t offer any products (I offered hand-holding training, which in my opinion is worth a lot more anyway).

You get the idea.

You know what would work even better than that?

MAILING the royal letter. Yes. Talk about the old school. If you collect actual addresses from your BUYERS, you might consider doing this on high-value items.

I know marketers who do this. They are few and far between, and they are KILLING it. They only send emails to buyers, which greatly improves their conversions. They use a service to deliver the advertisements to them. And they earn more on one of these shipments than most successful sellers earn in 6 months.

Which brings me to my second idea … if you don’t have your buyers’ email addresses yet, start collecting them now.

When you have a sizeable serving of them (at least 200, preferably 500), approach a marketer with a product that you would love on their list. Make sure there is a lot of profit on that product. Take the sales letter, adapt it to a black and white envelope (cheap to produce) and send it to your buyers.

See what happens. Touch up, rinse and repeat.

You can easily DOUBLE your income using this method.

Know why? Again, because it is the opposite. Is different. Hardly anyone is doing it.

Your client receives maybe half a dozen emails in a day. Two are bills. Two are local business sales brochures. One is a catalog.

And then there is that mysterious white envelope. Yes, it will open. Yes, it will be read.

Wow! They are surprised. Someone they know from ONLINE is sending them REAL MAIL.

They don’t throw it away. Instead, they open their browser, type in the URL, and REQUEST THE PROGRAM.

Sure, not everyone does, but … enough. Believe me, I have seen this job over and over again. That’s why I’m about to start sending mail-order sales letters (Shhh, don’t tell anyone!)
