Mononucleosis can cause a rash on the penis

It is known as the kissing disease and is thought to be something that happens mainly to teenagers. But mononucleosis can, in fact, affect people of any age, creating fatigue that can be debilitating at times. Indirectly, mono can be a penile health problem because fatigue, which is its hallmark, can seriously dampen a man’s enthusiasm for sex. But in some cases, a man with mono may also develop another penile health problem, namely a penile rash.

Other name

Sometimes called Epstein-Barr virus (or sometimes Epstein-Barr syndrome), mononucleosis (called mono for short) is caused by a virus. It is popularly known that mononucleosis is transmitted through kissing (because it is well transmitted in saliva), but in fact it can also be transmitted in other ways: by sneezing, coughing, drinking from the same glass as an infected person or sharing food (or utensils) with a person who has the condition.

So mononucleosis is a virus, but what else should a person know about it? First, most people are exposed to the virus at some point and most don’t know it. This asymptomatic exposure tends to give them immunity. However, about 25% of people exposed to the virus develop mononucleosis. And again, although most of these people are young children, adolescents, or young adults, it is possible for a person of any age to develop infectious mononucleosis.

Symptoms

As noted above, when a person gets mononucleosis, the symptom most commonly associated with it is fatigue, often extreme fatigue. The amount of fatigue can vary greatly from person to person (and varies greatly from moment to moment in any person), but it is often extreme and even debilitating, requiring a lot of time in bed resting and sleeping.

Beyond fatigue, symptoms generally include aches, sore throat, fever, swollen lymph nodes, swelling in the spleen or liver, and a rash on the body, which can and often includes a rash on the penis.

Rarely is the mononucleosis rash isolated strictly as a penile rash, and more often it covers large swathes of the body, sometimes, for example, the entire upper torso.

Ironically, the rash is not necessarily directly related to mononucleosis; rather, it tends to occur when a person taking penicillin develops mononucleosis. The combination of the two creates the rash, which are usually flat patches, small red dots. Sometimes they appear as bumps, other times strictly flat; in some cases, they can develop as sores. They can often itch, which can be quite uncomfortable when it comes to a penile rash.

Treatment

Mono often goes away on its own, although it may take several weeks to do so. Bed rest is recommended, as is eating a healthy diet and making sure you drink plenty of fluids.

When a rash appears, as noted, it is often in response to the use of penicillin, so discontinuation of the drug is recommended. The rash on the penis (or the rash on any other part of the body) will usually go away within a few days of stopping the medication. However, the rash can still be bothersome during these days, so the skin should be kept adequately moist. Sometimes calamine lotion helps decrease the urge to scratch. It is also suggested to wear comfortable clothing that does not irritate the skin.

Mononucleosis penile rash can be a nuisance, so help minimize its effects by applying a world-class penile health oil daily. (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil which is clinically proven to be gentle and safe for the skin). Oil will help keep skin hydrated if it contains a high-quality emollient (such as shea butter) and a natural moisturizer (such as vitamin E). The delicate skin of the penis will also be strengthened if the oil contains a powerful antioxidant, such as alpha lipoic acid.
