Poison ivy remedy

Here’s the story of how I accidentally stumbled upon this incredibly simple poison ivy treatment. It works right away, clears up in a few days (not two weeks!), And it’s sooo easy … and free!

I was camping somewhere that luckily had a hot shower nearby, so when my leg felt a little itchy after a hike through the woods, I knew what it was. I had severe poison ivy as a child and was painfully familiar with its symptoms. In fact, I became allergic to poison ivy and just had to be downwind before my face puffed up. It was horrible.

He knew the symptoms very well. So I went to the camp shower to try to wash off the oils that rub my skin and cause the reaction. As warm water ran up my leg, it felt so good that I made it a little warmer.

Well that felt even better. It felt like he was scratching it without scratching it! A delicious feeling.

After a few seconds of that, I heated the water a bit. Wonderful! I kept doing this, making the water a little warmer after reveling in the sensations for a while at a time.

At one point, the water almost burned off and the relief I felt was fading away. So I turned off the shower.

Looking down, I saw how pink and almost throbbing the poison ivy patch was and I thought, maybe it would be a good idea to cool that down. Then I started running cold water on the spot. The colder the water got, the better it felt, until everything felt a little neutral and numb.

When getting out of the shower, I was careful to pat the area dry and not rub it. Surprisingly, it was no longer itchy. Hurrah!

Even more surprising, it didn’t sting again for almost 12 hours! Then when he got back into action, I knew exactly what to do and went to the shower, repeating the gradual warm-up and instant cool-down I’d done earlier.

Each water treatment gave me 12 hours of relief before the itching resumed. But on the third day, I noticed the poison ivy was turning brown, something that usually only happens after it “runs its course” in a week to 10 days, IF it doesn’t spread to other areas.

Well, poison ivy never spread. It didn’t itch at all after a few days. It dried up and died.

Years later, when I was exposed again, I did the same water treatment: so natural, just by varying the temperature, so easy, so effective, such a simple cure for something that makes millions of people miserable every year.

So that’s my story. You can try using an ice cube to cool faster and numb the itch. Just be sure to reach the limit of your tolerance for “hot” before turning to the cold. And happy camping / hiking / gardening / childhood!

Another simple remedy for poison ivy is to mix baking soda and apple cider vinegar to form a cream (not a paste) and apply to the affected areas. You can do this after you’ve done the water treatment and it speeds up your overall healing time.

If poison ivy has gotten around your eyes, just use the cream. It may not be a good idea to apply hot water around the eyes.

Just remember, if it itches, don’t scratch. That will only spread it. If it’s poison ivy, you’re in luck, all you need is water!
