Setting limits on your kids’ TV time is good for everyone

Does this scenario play out in your home? When you get home from work, one of the first things you see is your son or daughter in front of the TV watching her favorite TV shows. If this only took an hour or so, this wouldn’t be that big of a deal. But sometimes he or she is in front of the TV watching two, three, even four hours of shows a night.

If this happens in your home, it’s a problem. Instead, your child should be playing outside, reading, or spending time with friends.

You need to set some limits when it comes to how much your child watches TV. For example, don’t let your child run straight to the TV and turn it on when he gets home from school. Ask them to do all of their homework as soon as he gets home. This will also prevent him from forgetting to do it and help you avoid harassing him later at night to do it.

After your child does his homework, you can allow him to watch a fixed amount of television that you define in advance. Thirty minutes is a long time. Once that half hour is up, then convince them to do something constructive and productive. Some of these productive activities include riding a bike, painting, doing arts and crafts, playing dress-up, playing outside with friends, or even helping with chores around the house.

When setting your limits, be sure to stick to your guns. You should also set limits on other inactive things your son or daughter does instead of watching TV. For example, don’t let him just go online or play video games instead of watching TV. Make sure they do active and healthy things with the new fun time they have.

Some other limits you could set include letting your child watch TV only if they have finished their homework, setting a daily time limit for watching TV and once the time is up, your child has to do something else, and You can also let your child watch educational programs. The latter is a great idea if you have a younger child that you want to protect from all the inappropriate things on TV.

At the end of the day, it’s just not a good idea to let your child watch too much television. It’s great entertainment, sure, but it’s not helping you in the long run. It can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and can expose your children to ideas that you don’t agree with. So take a position that may not be popular at first, but will definitely pay off in the long run. Set some limits on the way your child watches television. Eventually, you’ll both be glad you did.
