The importance of pets

Pets are very important to everyone who owns them. Those who own pets live longer and more satisfied lives. They are known to lower our blood pressure and give us a reason for each day. I have had cats and dogs and they all left their footprints on my heart. Each pet has its own personality and its relationship with you is based on love and trust.

Some dogs are hunting companions. They enjoy catching up games with their owners and enjoying their outings together. These dogs also make excellent family pets. I had an Irish setter who went bird hunting with my husband. She was all business in the woods but when the house was the sweetest dog. This dog was also brought to obedience trials and won awards at dog shows. She helped create treasured memories for our family.

I have seen guide dogs that allow their owner to participate in activities that they could not do without their presence. There used to be a man led to our church every Sunday to sit in the front row by his guide dog. The priest did everything possible to bring him the communion host. The dog was obedient and a blessing to this man and it was beautiful to see the dog as he worked. No one was allowed to pet the dog while doing his job. He was a beautiful German shepherd.

There are other dogs that are just family pets. He had two other dogs that he used to walk daily. I miss them and their time with me as they have now passed over the rainbow bridge. The second dog was an English setter and the third dog was a Gordon setter. There are so many funny memories in my mind.

Of course we had cats with these dogs. It is a myth that cats and dogs don’t get along. If they are raised together, they tolerate each other and sometimes even learn to love each other. Better to bring them as puppies or kittens and then they will bond with each other and can even play together.

I just can’t imagine a day without my pets in my life. If I am sick, I have one of my cats who will constantly meow and walk around telling me that I need asthma medicine. This cat, Joshua, who I speak of as my angel kitty. Tinkerbelle, my newest member of our family, has not yet learned to anticipate such events. I know that my pets help me throughout the day by showing me their love and attention. To me, they are worth more than any diamond ring.

I know that my own life would not be fulfilled without the presence of a pet. They give me a reason to live, as each day with them is a treasure to behold on the pages of the book of my own life.

I hope you have enjoyed my thoughts on pets in our lives.
