Cheap Travel Accommodation – Youth Hostels vs. Camping

Regardless of where you travel, accommodation takes up a large chunk of your travel budget, and unless you find a way to save, you may end up with a much shorter trip than you expect. One of the first things that will affect your accommodation budget depends on how many of you will be traveling together. Traveling in a group or even traveling with another couple has enormous advantages. It can save you that staying in youth hostels or camping is much more comfortable and profitable if you are 4 or more people.

Hotels are obviously nice, but in reality the price of a hotel room for one night can buy you a week of cheap accommodation. Obviously, you won’t have too many amenities, but you’ll just be sleeping there, right?

For cheap accommodation you basically have 2 options. Youth hostels and campsites. Let’s quickly look at the pros and cons of each.

First of all, youth hostels offer cheap and profitable stays that are usually very central. Accommodation is usually very basic with dormitory-style shared rooms and shared bathrooms. Usually there is a central kitchen area and you basically buy a bed for the night. Some offer rooms with bathrooms and more amenities, but they are probably more in the price range of a hotel suite. The main benefit is the fact that it is central and close to all the sights and attractions that you would like to explore as a tourist.

Camping offers many more comforts and if you don’t like the idea of being cramped in a dormitory with 20 other backpackers then camping is worth it. It’s probably a lot cheaper than a youth hostel, but you’ll need to have your own tent or motorhome. Although it is much cheaper, it is usually located on the outskirts of cities and can make the trip there and back a real hassle, and an expensive exercise. Camping can be very sociable and a great option if you are traveling in a group.
