Disadvantages of eBooks

Now, more and more people prefer e-books to traditional ones, because they can save them time and money. However, with various e-books being flooded, more and more people are aware of the disadvantages of e-books.

The fact that e-books require special devices or personal computers can be seen as a disadvantage. Many eBooks are generally produced to be compatible with certain software, which itself may not be readily available. Since eBooks are dependent on other equipment, certain hardware or software failures can affect it. Unless the hardware, Internet connection, or battery power an eBook reader requires is available, your electronic documents are useless. Also, e-books are hardware and software dependent and are more easily damaged than a printed book.

E-book reading devices are surely more expensive than printed books. All eBook devices require power. There is growing concern that e-books today may not be accessible or compatible with future e-book software or devices.

Screen glare and eye strain are a serious concern for many potential users of eBook technology. A lot of concern reading from an e-book reader could damage the eyes. The display resolution of computer screens and electronic devices is considerably less than the print quality produced by a printing press.

Reading from a computer lacks the familiarity and comfort of reading from a book. A paper book can be opened and leafed through, while an electronic text is more difficult to navigate.

E-books have an unreliable shelf life. Paper has a much longer lifespan than most digital forms of storage. Due to the rapid development of new computer systems, it is difficult to judge whether software or hardware will become obsolete. As new hardware is developed, structures must be put in place to allow existing materials to be migrated to the new platforms so that they can still be accessed. Methods for preserving electronic documents must also be developed. A high degree of equipment reliability must be part of the electronic devices that handle print book replacements.

It can be hard to distinguish yourself from ‘almost anyone’. since almost anyone can make an ebook. In order for your book to be equivalent to a “real” book, you should find and test several eBook publishers before making a deal. A flashy website does not guarantee a great publisher. e-books and see if yours fits into that mix.
