Four historical places in Famagusta

All about the Tower of Othello

Yes, this Tower of the Citadel or Tower of Othello is the medieval fortress or Citadel that perfectly guards the city-town or the port. The tower is remarkable in its structure. The entrance to it is pierced through the Venetian fortifications. There is a marble slab just above the entrance and it is beautifully carved (Venice’s insignia, a winged lion, is there). An aerial view would allow visitors to see the shell of the medieval castle that lies within the solid Venetian walls. In the courtyard of the citadel, visitors can find ancient cannons. There is a Great Hall and a kitchen at the end within the walls. It is presumed today that it served as a dining room or refractory room in those days. It is supported by gothic arches. The ceiling is vaulted.

The Royal Palace

Famous as the palace of the Lusigans, as it was built by them in the 13th century. It is close to the Saint Nicholas Cathedral (now known as the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque). The palace is not in its original structure since it was ruined by an earthquake. What visitors can see today are remains of the palace that even seemed to reflect the massiveness of the structure.

Church of Saint George

When you are in the old walled city of Famagusta, don’t forget to visit this church. It was reported that this church was built in opposition to the nearby church which is the Church of Saint Nicholas. Visitors who come here can be amazed by the beauty of this church. What visitors can see today of this church are only ruins. The two great earthquakes that shook Famagusta also seriously affected this church. Inside the church, visitors can also find paintings on the walls.

San Bernabe Monastery

This monastery, famous for its beautiful location, is located on the opposite side of the Famagusta-Salamis route and closer to the Royal Tombs. According to reports, it was built to commemorate the most important saint that is Christ Baranabas. It is reported that this monastery was built in the 5th century. The structure clearly defines the art of medieval art and architecture. Visitors can also find the story of Baranabas on one of the walls (There is a story that tells what the archbishop has seen in his dream, how Baranabas’ body was shown to him, etc.).
