Green Tea Weight Loss – Lose Weight Simply Without The Hype

On the topic of weight loss with green tea, Wikipedia says that there are no pages on weight loss management and green tea on the government website Pubmed.com. However, on Pubmed.com, a search for green tea and obesity reveals that Wikipedia is dead wrong, with literally hundreds of articles showing that green tea does, in fact, have at least some effect on weight loss. Until now, most research has focused on a component of tea known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). This article will focus primarily on three different studies, conducted by different universities, that show how adding tea can be a great addition to your weight loss regimen.

The first study, entitled Effects of green tea consumption on blood pressure, total cholesterol, body weight, and fat in healthy volunteers., was conducted by Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland. The study included 12 participants who drank an EGCG-enriched tea containing between 600 and 800 mg of EGCG. After 14 days, the results indicated a 2.36% reduction in body fat, simply by drinking green tea. The study goes on to admit that the effects of drinking the tea would likely be greater in subjects suffering from obesity.

Another study, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, and conducted by the Medical University of Berlin, conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover pilot study involving six overweight men. The men were placed into several groups, with one group receiving water, another group receiving caffeine, another group receiving a placebo, and the test group receiving caffeine and tea extract with various levels of EGCG. Only the group that received tea extract showed any significant benefit with regard to fat oxidation, a measure of how well the body burns fat. Most interestingly, at a level of 122 mg of EGCG, a level equivalent to drinking five cups of green tea, fat oxidation increased by 12%.

Finally, another study conducted by the University of Geneva had participants drink five cups of tea per day. Without any additional activities or supplements, the study found that the human body burned an additional 70 to 80 calories per day through the process of thermogenesis, as a result of the EGCG in the tea. Assuming an average gain of 75 calories per day, simply drinking tea will burn 525 calories per week.

It is well known that many of the diets prominently featured on television, in magazines, and in newspapers are, to put it politely, less than effective. Also, many of these diets are expensive and require special supplements or prepackaged foods. There are also numerous exercise devices designed to “help you lose weight” but instead just siphon precious cash out of your wallet. In addition, these diets require radical changes in your lifestyle. For example, when the Atkins diet became popular, everyone started avoiding carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are everywhere and to avoid them it is necessary not to eat such common things as bread or rice. I think it is these radical changes that cause many to fail.
