How does an ice cream machine work?

The days of bulky and cumbersome ice cream makers are long gone, and there are many stylish and easy-to-use models on the market. There are two types available: manual and electric, and the designs range from very basic to quite complex.

Despite the variations in design, all ice cream machines work on the same principle. One type of paddle, known as a ‘dasher’, fits inside a container that holds the mixture. The whisk stirs the mixture as it freezes. This is to keep the mixture smooth, as without air to keep it aerated, it would become rock solid and ice crystals would form, detracting from flavor and appearance.

The canister that houses the disposer is located in another container, often referred to as a ‘freezer bin’. The freezer bin contains the freezing agent, which is usually a chemical refrigerant that is sealed within the walls of the bin, a mixture of ice and salt, or an electric refrigeration unit. The freezer container needs to be placed in your freezer for up to 48 hours before it is cold enough.

The type of manufacturer you have purchased affects the way it is used. A manual one requires the user to turn the disposal on their own for at least 30 minutes, to make around five liters, while an electric machine can produce the same amount in less than half the time. It will also help save you physical labor, as an electric motor twists the throttle for you.

Electric makers are faster and easier to use: just pour in the mix, turn on the machine, and wait 15-30 minutes. Of course, this added technology means a higher purchase price, so you’ll have to weigh how often you’ll use it, and how much physical effort you’re willing to put in to use it, against the cost of buying the machine.

After the proper amount of time has elapsed and it’s smooth, cool, and creamy, it’s usually ready to eat right away.

Ice cream machines can be fun to use, they can save you money buying liter after liter in stores, and they will give you a finished product you will be proud of. They allow you to use your imagination to create new and exciting flavors that you and your family will enjoy, and they are a great addition to any kitchen.
