How to make liquid soap for your precious baby

How to make liquid soap is one of those hobby activities that I did when I was expecting my firstborn. It was one of my main considerations what I will use to clean my newborn. And since I have been making homemade soap for some time now, my concern is not to use harsh chemicals on my precious little one. If I’m not using chemical laden soap for myself, why should I use it for my baby? So I experimented with various formulations to come up with the best possible blend for my baby to use.

The first thing I investigated is which are the purest and gentlest ingredients that are best suited for a newborn. The essential oil is one of my concerns as, in my experience, its aroma can be a bit overpowering at times. Luckily a friend of mine who is an herbalist told me that a chamomile essential oil is the most suitable for newborns because of its very soft aroma.

I also had to figure out what other ingredients I can mix into my body wash. I don’t want to use chemicals like potassium hydroxide as this can cause some irritation to my newborn, so I had to look at the alternative. Good thing I learned from a fellow soap maker that when making liquid soap you can actually avoid using lye or potassium hydroxide. It may not last long, but at least you have the assurance of a chemical-free recipe.

So I headed over to my soap making area and mixed up my first batch of liquid soap. I used the olive oil bar soap that a friend of mine from Tunisia gave me as a gift. She is married to a guy from this beautiful exotic place in South Africa and apparently, one of the main products of this country is olive oil. So because of its abundance, they make bar soap with their purest, most natural olive oil.

I grated the bar of soap with my cheese grater and set it aside. I boiled some water and poured it into my grated bar of soap. The ratio I used is 2:1; i.e. for every 2 cups of liquid, I mix in one cup of grated bar soap for each batch. I didn’t want to do much because I am aware that their expected life is shorter than commercial body washes since I am not using condoms.

I mixed it with a blender to make sure my body wash is very gentle on my baby’s sensitive skin. I decided to put a few drops of chamomile and lavender oil for a calming effect. And then I mixed it up again very well. After which, I let it cool for several hours.

Another gave me this very cute hand friend soap dispenser and this is what I used to store my baby’s liquid soap. It is so smooth and soft on my skin. I even used some for a face wash and it is so refreshing and relaxing. I can’t wait to use it on my baby.

How to make liquid soap is very easy and fun too. So, are you convinced that making your own baby wash is the most wonderful gift you can give your newborn? Give it a try and I am sure you will enjoy the same liquid soap for your personal use as well.
