Marathi Songs and Marathi Music

The state of Maharashtra is one of the wealthiest of all the Indian states in India. This has been attributed to its ports in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, which attracts a large number of businesses from all over India and the rest of the world. However, many do not attribute this to the people of this Indian state. Much of the wealth that is generated in the state is due to the fact that the people here are very hard-working. Most of these people are from rural areas that have a unique cultural heritage which is their music. Marathi songs, particularly Marathi folk songs like “Koli Gite” or “Lok Geete” are sung in non-urban areas of the state and attract people to work hard. In addition, farmers in the state sing popular Marathi songs praising the gods which gives them courage and willpower to carry out their laborious tasks in the fields. This results in hard working people and ultimately helps the state to become more prosperous.

Maharashtra presents its own individual tradition and culture. Songs and dramas are some of the few components of art that most distinguish this civilization and tradition. Marathi music best represents the modus liveliness of people in Maharashtra. Maharashtra is like an arts and culture mogul for artists across India. Also, numerous illustrious excavations, temples, mosques and many more, add to the fantastic effects of the Marathi culture.

Marathi music came to prosper during the film era. When the big screen came to India; It was the Marathi movies that were more popular than the Hindi ones. The first film to be made in Bombay was called “Raja Harishchandra” in 1913 by Dadasaheb Phalke. Although this first feature film was supposed to be in Marathi, it was a silent film.

The film and subsequent stage plays laid the foundation for music events in India. Today when we talk about Bollywood, it is undoubtedly the gift of the Marathi people and their musical heritage. The best singers in India are undoubtedly from Maharashtra like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Suresh Wadkar and many more.
