Romantic words and actions: 7 tips to keep your love alive

For many of us, love is the center of life. And when love isn’t flowing, our days can feel empty and dry. This flow of love could be with a new boyfriend or girlfriend. Or it may be the precious love of/for a long time spouse.

ROMANTIC WORDS AND LOVING ACTIONS

Keeping that current of love moving is a challenge that many of us face every day.

I was married for 30 years until my loving husband died suddenly. And now, 4 years later, I am fortunate to enjoy another wonderful full-time relationship. I have always had a great interest in finding simple words and actions that give my lover a boost.

Here are 7 things you can say and/or do to help maintain that mysterious feeling we call “love.”

Chat – Romantic Words

1. “I am so grateful to have you in my life.”

These words are magical. Ten simple words that say a lot and can repair torn feelings. During our hectic days, we tend to overlook an expression of mutual gratitude as a way to stay close. Say this to your loved one at any time, but especially when something nice has happened between the two of you. These words can deepen the feeling of trust and appreciation.

2. “I’m drinking you…”

These words are a bit riskier to say, but powerful. You need to find the right time to say it, so you don’t feel foolish. My husband used to stand in the kitchen sipping his coffee and look at me with loving eyes over the rim of his mug. Then he would say those 4 words. My heart would soar. He would tell her that he was crazy. And we would laugh together at our good fortune to be in love.

3. “I was thinking today about the things we can do together. Why not…”

This requires a little more thought before speaking. Look for novel and inexpensive ideas that can be achieved without a lot of planning or work. Surprise her with the suggestion of a visit to an art gallery or a local concert. Suggest a walk in a nearby park. Or plan to take a bubble bath together. (You must provide the bubble bath crystals!) Or, as my boyfriend recently suggested, “Let’s have the best hot dog in town!”

Act – Simple Romantic Actions

5.TOUCH

There is nothing like the pleasure of touch. The next time you have a happy thought about the man or woman he loves, act on it. Get up, walk towards him/her and put your arms around him/her. Just hug. No sexual provocation is necessary. This is a time for the joy of simple physical connection.

6. DANCE

It is very difficult to remain unhappy and disconnected when you dance together. Find the right moment. Play a song that you both like. Or maybe a song is playing on the radio… Take your loved one by the hand and dance. Don’t try to dance through the entire song. A couple of minutes can change and improve your mood. You don’t need to dance well for this to have a great effect. Dance for fun.

7. IMAGINE – Floating in a sea of love

Sometimes it is not possible to involve your loved one in physical terms. He or she may be away from you, either physically (ie miles away) or emotionally (needs to do some healing work).

In that case, use your powers of imagination to bridge the gap in your own mind: love is not a fleeting “now and then” element in life. We are surrounded by it. Love flows from friends and family and from pets.

We are fed by the love we feel for our own life; for our passions, our homes and our work. There is always an ocean of love around us. But sometimes, we can’t feel it or express it.

When you feel love slipping between you and your loved one, try this: Find a few minutes of quiet. Sit or lie down. Close your eyes. Imagine yourself and your loved one floating on a sea of love. You are surrounded by effortless love. You do not ask him or her for anything because the two of you are surrounded by infinite love. Feel the fear float away…and relax. Know that you will be fine, no matter what. Then find ways to express your love to those around you. When your partner returns, you will be in a loving frame of mind and open to healing wounds or reestablishing a deep connection.
