Samsung Chromebook review: A good laptop at a reasonable price for buyers on a budget

Technically, if you count Google’s CR-48 prototype, the Samsung Chromebook can be considered the fifth iteration of the Google Chromebook. Like the other four Chromebooks above, this one also runs Google Chrome OS instead of conventional operating systems like Mac OS X Mountain Lion or Windows 8. What you need to know is that this is a really cheap, light, thin and durable laptop and if you spend most of your time on web apps then it’s worth considering.

Processor: Unlike previous Chromebooks, which had Intel chips, this one is powered by a 40% faster 1.7 GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos 5 Dual ARM Cortex-A15 core processor. This makes this Samsung Chrome be particularly notable. You will notice how quiet it is when you are using it.

Hard Drive: Its smooth operation is also due to the fact that it has an SSD hard drive instead of a mechanical one, although with only 16GB of space. Storage can of course be expanded by connecting a portable hard drive to its USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port.

Memory: This new Chromebook only has 2G of RAM, but it will never feel underpowered in general use. The memory is enough for the Samsung Chromebook as only one app is running on it. An external monitor can be connected by getting an HDMI port.

Max resolution and screen size: This Chromebook has an 11.6-inch screen with a max resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, which is perfectly fine, though clearly lackluster in quality.

This new Chromebook also has a shared video memory (UMA) graphics processor, and it’s no surprise that it doesn’t have an optical drive. Weighing 1.1kg, it is lightweight, portable and can be carried in a handbag.

Performance

For things like browsing, emailing, watching YouTube, typing, and the like, the performance of this Samsung Chromebook is practically remarkable. The only time lags are noticeable is when pulling information from the internet. Most of the time, the stability of this Chrome will seem rock-solid, but it can occasionally restart without warning, even when doing seemingly harmless things. SD video streams play perfectly, though no downloads and may have problems with HD.

The verdict

The Chromebook concept has always seemed promising. Despite the fact that traditional computer users may scoff at it, those on a budget would end up with a new computer at a very cheap price. It’s also worth adding that the Samsung Chromebook comes with 100GB of free Google Drive for 2 years. This Chromebook may not appeal to every computer user, but it’s still a really good little machine with decent specs and good enough performance.
