Austria was able to maintain its position in the top group for patent applications in the 2020 corona year. Particularly innovative: plastic, lighting systems – and a manufacturer of fittings.

The corona pandemic hardly affected inventiveness in the previous year. This is shown by the patent index compiled annually by the European Patent Office (EPO), which shows a slight minus of 0.7 percent for 2020 compared to the previous year – while economic output in the euro zone fell by 6.6 percent. The number of patent applications in Europe remained largely stable compared to the record year 2019 at a total of 180,250 and minus 0.7 percent.
