The Spanish Bakery of San Agustín – Review

Note: Menu offerings and prices may vary.

Freshly baked bread in loaves or homemade rounds and empenadas baked in a stone hearth oven, spicy sausage wrapped in a puff pastry crust…need I say more?

The Spanish Bakery has been in business for more than 30 years, according to the small chalkboard that hangs from the stone building known as the Salcedo Kitchen. I think I’ve been coming here for at least 10 of those years and have never been disappointed except when they run out of bread around 2pm or when it rains because they only have 2 indoor picnic tables. Of course, you can sit at one of the picnic tables under a tree and stay relatively dry if there isn’t a downpour.

Try a spicy meat-filled empanada and a plate of picadillo over rice. If you’re really hungry, add a smoked sausage roll. Do you like it spicy but want it hot? Then add some Datil Do It Pepper Sauce, made locally and marketed nationally. And no meal is complete without a loaf or round of that melt-in-your-mouth bread. The Kitchen also serves cookies and soup of the day.

Patience is a virtue on busy days, as the line can be quite long and the kitchen rooms are packed. The Kitchen is a popular stop for school groups and other large parties who call ahead. But don’t worry, the wait is well worth it. If you don’t like the lines, check out the Whetstone Chocolate shop right as you enter the grounds and sample the creamy fudge and sugary pralines. That should whet your appetite!

The Spanish Bakery is open 7 days, usually between 10:30 am and 3:00 pm. It is located about 100 yards below the oldest wooden schoolhouse at 42-1/2 St. George Street.
