The village of Windlesham

Windlesham is a charming village on Surrey Heath located in the South East of England. Like its close neighbors Virginia Water, Bagshot and Chobham, it is in the beautiful district of Surrey.

Windlesham derives its name from Windle Brook, which begins in Berkshire’s Swinley Forest, runs south of the village towards Chomham. The area is rich in history as some Neolithic tools and implements have been discovered which are believed to date back to the Bronze Age.

Today, Windlesham is a vibrant community with a wonderful village spirit. This town is a fabulous place to live if access to Heathrow Airport and central London is important. Its convenient location, close to junction 3 of the M3, has also attracted big business, including Eli Lilly and Rainbow Play Systems.

The town of Windlesham used to be a small community within Windsor Great Park. It was built as a remote agricultural settlement around a rolling moorland, similar to Sunninghill. This quiet corner of the county appears to have been too sparsely inhabited to have been mentioned in the Domesday Book. There are references in historical records to the exploits of highwaymen who once plagued the area; no doubt this is why Windlesham Golf Club hosts its own highwayman events.

The Windlesham village countryside is home to a recreational park as well as a busy playground. A series of well-loved town events take place in the countryside. The best known of these events is the annual Windlesham Festival. The ground is also used in the summer months by Windlesham Cricket Club, creating the perfect English village scene.

Windlesham is also known for its annual buggy race; the charity event is usually held on Boxing Day and involves locals dressing up in fancy dress, completing a 3.5-mile drive through the village of Windlesham, stopping at local pubs along the way.

Windlesham also offers different sports activities. Not only is it famous for its Golf Club, but it also has a driving club. The Windle Valley Runners running club is suitable for all standards of runners. The club meets three times a week and members can come together for fun, exercise or competition.

The Windlesham Society encourages people who live in the neighborhood to get active in getting involved in the community and giving something back to their local community.

Famous residents of Windlesham past and present include Dr Brian May of the rock band Queen, Brian Blessed, Sir Nick Faldo, Agatha Christie, Glen Hoddle, Sarah and the Duchess of York.

Windlesham is a preferred estate area for many royal families from the Middle East who like the proximity to Ascot for horse racing.
