Three Traditional American Recipes

There’s no denying that American-style food has made a huge impact on cuisines all over the world! No, I don’t mean just fast food either! Traditional American foods like the Coney Island-style hot dog, French fries, fried chicken, and hamburger and fries are just a few of the things that, while not all quintessentially American, have come to the world through their popularity in the United States. While it’s hard to narrow them down, I’ve included three of my favorite American recipes in this article. I hope you enjoy it!

Baked Fried Chicken

Ingredients:
1 cup low-fat buttermilk
4 chicken breast halves (8 ounces) (with bones)
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cookie flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 butter spoons

Addresses:
In a shallow bowl, combine the buttermilk and chicken. Be sure to flip the chicken to completely coat it with the buttermilk. In another shallow dish, mix the biscuit flour and flour. Remove chicken from buttermilk and place on a sterilized surface. Sprinkle the chicken with half a teaspoon of salt and pepper. Pass the chicken through the mixture of four and shake off the excess flour, then reserve the chicken. Repeat this process with each chicken breast. Melt the butter in an ovenproof skillet and cook the chicken on both sides until golden brown. Remove the pan from the stove and place it in a preheated 425 degree F oven for about half an hour. Fried chicken is traditionally served with mashed potatoes and coleslaw.

Crackers and Sausage Sauce

Ingredients:
(gravity)
1 pound sausage meat
3 tablespoons of flour
2 – 3 cups of milk
Salt and pepper to taste
(biscuits)
2 cups self-rising flour
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk

Addresses:
Crumble sausage meat into skillet and cook until meat is no longer pink. Add the flour one tablespoon at a time and stir quickly. Keep stirring until a paste forms and turn the heat up to high. Add the milk, stir, then add the salt. This mixture should be quite thick. To make the cookies, mix the butter and flour together with a pastry cutter, if you have one. Add the milk, stirring as you go. Knead the dough in the bowl, then transfer it to a floured surface. Roll it out and cut it into circular shapes (I think a glass works well for this). Place the cookies on a baking sheet and bake at 425 degrees F for about 10 to 15 minutes, until the cookies are golden brown. Serve biscuits open-faced or cut, with sausage gravy poured on top.

Nut cake

Ingredients:
3 eggs
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 cup corn syrup
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups pecans
1 (10-inch) pie crust (unbaked)

Addresses:
Beat the eggs together, then add the corn syrup, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Melt the butter and add it to the egg mixture. Mix well while adding the vanilla and walnuts. Carefully pour this mixture into the cake batter (you don’t want to overfill it). Bake at 350 degrees F for about 50 minutes, or until cake has set. Allow cake to cool before serving. It is traditionally served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
