Weight loss: the importance of self-awareness

How aware are you? If they asked you, what would you answer? Most people do not think about self-awareness and therefore find it difficult to give a precise answer, and others think they are perfectly self-aware when in fact they are quite the opposite. There is a third category and it belongs to those who deny it. They avoid any thought or mention of self-awareness because they are aware of their flaws and do not want to be reminded of them.

It is a very sad fact that most of us live our lives on automatic pilot. In a way, it makes it easier to deal with a busy and complicated life. We allow ourselves to develop garments – many of them bad – to be able to cope. In many of the things we do, we become automatons and life floats by. We are unaware of what is going on around us. We don’t notice much at all, particularly about ourselves. Things just ‘happen’ in our lives. It is as if we are detached from reality. When from time to time we are forced to confront the real world, or the world we have unknowingly created for ourselves, it makes us so unhappy that we usually crawl back into our shells and carry on as before.

The secret to successful weight loss, and in particular permanent weight loss, is self-awareness. The only way to permanently lose weight is to make a personal change. If you are not aware of your bad habits and what needs to be changed, then the task is almost impossible.

It is not difficult to become more self-aware. In very simple terms, it is about “realizing”. If you begin to notice more about yourself and what you do, and about others, the effect you have on them and the way they react to you, you will slowly begin to develop your self-awareness. It can be a bit scary at first, but the more self-aware you become, the more self-confident you’ll feel. You will be in a much better position to make informed and responsible decisions about your health and weight; to learn new slim habits and get rid of bad habits. Being able to lose weight and keep it off will soon become a reality.
