Windows installation

The primary source of information for window installation should be the window manufacturer’s instructions. For the windows installation, first deploy the installation ends. Apply caulk to the back of the fins where they meet the outer sheet. Install the window unit from the outside, placing the nailed fins on the outside. A galvanized roofing nail or exterior screw can be used to temporarily secure the piece. Plumb the windows with a vertical level. Shim the sill to level it. Then level the other parts of the window and secure the frame in place. Shim all sides taking care to keep it level. Check that the sides are square and that the diagonal distances are equal. This ensures that the window is not crooked, which will make the operation difficult. Finally, finish nailing the entire unit. Reinstall the old trim or, if you’re doing a full Denver window replacement, create a new exterior trim. Use caulking around each piece of trim. If you have vinyl siding, add a new layer of vinyl over the trim to match the exterior. Most replacement jobs will come with new screens. Check with your Denver Windows company for matching screens with screen clips. Secure the screen at the screen tips.

Once you have the replacement window in place, it’s time to install the interior window trim. Even new, energy-efficient insulated windows are of little use if you don’t secure the window edges. Open weight pockets are not good insulators. You can fill these air pockets with foam or pump insulation. Fill all the spaces around the window with insulation. If you have to cut the frame to install the insulation, install the trim over the cut edge. Beware of foam insulation as it expands, which can affect window performance by sagging. Everywhere should be caulked. For thicker walls, you may need leg extension moldings. Attach extensions, then caulk and fasten trim with finish nails.

Some Denver factory windows come with frames installed. Most modern windows do not come with a window stool, although department stores may have them. You can even create your own window stool for a custom DIY project. You may need to do some grouting to repair your interior wall. Once the wall is smooth plaster to finish. Then seal the frame and trim with wood sealant. Paint everything except weather stripping and vinyl. Interior wood windows do not come with locks, so they should be installed last.
