Cheap bird cages: get a cage that fits your budget

Birds can be a great first pet for any family, but the expected costs may turn some people off. The truth is that birds can be an easy and inexpensive pet. Even their cages can be of good quality at low prices, as long as you know what you’re looking for.

When shopping for a bird cage that fits your budget, be sure to check the quality of the cage. Most cheap bird cages are actually decent for housing small birds like finches or parakeets, but the materials they are made from can make them a poor choice. Some older, cheaper models actually use paint that can chip easily. Birds are playful creatures known for chewing on things, including their cages. In many cases, the paint will not be toxic, but it may make your pretty cage not so pretty after all. Simple wire cages are usually a solid option at a low price.

Easy access to the bird, as well as cleanliness, is important to any good cage. Just because it’s low cost doesn’t mean it has to be low quality. Slide-out trays at the bottom of a cage make cleaning less of a hassle and most models come with this feature. Multiple openings will make removing the bird for handling much easier, although a single opening of the latch will suffice. Any way to open the cage must close tightly so that the bird cannot get out on its own. Hook latches or slide locks work best.

Larger birds will require larger cages and they are not cheap. If you are looking to not spend a lot of money, a small bird and a small cage is the way to go.
