How Moving Companies Differ

Moving companies are the company you hire to move your house to another house. But not all moving companies are created equal. They come as an independent moving company or a van for a smaller or local move. This type of move does not take as long as a move in which you are transferred to a distant city. A local moving company may have smaller crews and not charge as much as a larger national moving company. They may not have the same mileage rates or no mileage rates at all, but may offer a lump sum price for the move. If they have underestimated the amount of property to move and the amount of time it will take, you cannot be charged more for the move.

A national or larger moving company will generally charge you for both the miles traveled and the weight and/or volume of the items to be moved. If you have items like a spa or other large, bulky item that takes up space but is light in weight, you can get a quote with a flat bulky item charge attached. Usually, a larger moving company will not give you a flat rate to move because they know that they may have unexpected conditions during the move that can change their price. This is especially true if it’s a longer distance move that won’t be completed in a day or two. But all moving companies do their best to give you the right estimate up front so you know how much your move will ultimately cost you.

Using a company to move you makes a lot of sense because they already have the equipment to move your things efficiently. They have the dollies, ramps, and furniture blankets to wrap around the appliances so they don’t get scratched or bumped. This also applies to a large television or other electronic device. If you’re moving, you’ll need to borrow, buy, or rent these things somewhere.

Of course, there’s also the man and a small truck that can move your stuff when you don’t have a whole house to move. You would use such a moving company if, for example, you were leaving your college dorm and only had a few boxes, a bed, and some furniture. This would be advantageous in terms of price.

Regardless of how you ultimately choose, you can ensure your move is made easier by making sure all appliances are move-in ready. Drain the washer hoses. Empty the refrigerator and the freezer chest. Make sure loose parts are stabilized so they don’t slip off and get lost. Anything you can do before the mover arrives to make the move easier will benefit both parties. This doesn’t mean you have to transport boxes, but the more things are done in preparation for their arrival, it becomes a much quicker and easier move for everyone involved.
