PX90 Training: Can You Get Results Without Using Weights?

PX90 Training includes a variety of weight training DVDs in the training program; however, I often see people asking, “Can I get results with PX90 just using the bands?”

First things first, we will compare weights VS bands:

The idea behind the PX90 workout is to include a wide variety of exercises to challenge the body. There are several cardio DVDs, several weight training workouts, and a yoga workout.

During weight training days, the team behind Tony Horton lifts a variety of dumbbells, using various weights and techniques. However, there is usually another person demonstrating the use of bands in some sort of modified form to target the same muscle groups.

With a set of dumbbells, of course, one could complete each movement in its entirety by fully focusing on the muscle group in question. The interesting thing about the bands is that instead of deadlifting, they are like elastic bands and therefore work with tension.

You may find working with bands a bit more cumbersome because you will have to modify certain movements. With weights, it’s easy and requires much less maneuvering.

  • One advantage of using dumbbells is that you can do each movement, as directed, without having to think too hard. However, weights can also cause momentum which, if left unchecked, can cause injury OR prevent you from getting results.
  • A pro with the bands is that you can use them for almost every move in PX90 and the tension is more than enough to create a targeted burn. However, the bands don’t offer a constant weight as they use tension, so you can get more at the top of the movement, but the band quickly loses tension as you lower it back down.

Also, the bands will require a bit more attention to see what the example is during the DVD. Although, in the long run, it’s safe to say that you’ll start to learn how to modify each move.

So can you get results using just bands with the PX90 workout?

The answer is yes. However, the results will not be as explosive as they would be if you were to use a pair of dumbbells. Also, some movements will be very difficult to perform with the bands, since you have to stand on them to get the proper tension.

Weights are really the way to go. They will provide a constant weight and allow you to move from one exercise to another with ease, since you can follow the queues, instead of trying to see what the example is in the background.

Don’t let this determine you if you can’t get weights or don’t have access to this point. Bands will still get you results and are more of a challenge; they will just require a little more effort to learn how to use them correctly.
