The importance of infant and baby photography

Maternity photos, newborn photos, and baby and child photos are the subjects I most enjoy photographing of all time. When I started my business, I decided that I would photograph a variety of subjects. I wanted to have the option to do something different all the time, and I really just wanted the opportunity to be behind the camera. Now that I have several buds under my belt, a favorite has certainly appeared! There is a calm, an ease, and an endless flow of ideas when I take maternity photography, newborn photography, and baby and child photography. I literally have to fight the urge to chase pregnant women and moms into stores just to hand them my business card!

My love for baby photography stems from the love of my daughter. There is no love that compares to the love of a child. It is a primitive love. For that love, you want to photograph everything! By everything, I mean EVERYTHING! My daughter is so sick of seeing me point a camera at her, but if I catch her before nap time, she’s usually patient with me for a few minutes! The pleasure I get from being able to photograph her milestones, personality traits, gestures, etc. naturally it has become a career.

Maternity photos are so fascinating to me! It amazes me how many women cringe at the thought of a maternity photo shoot. They literally cringe! Why? Our bodies are miraculously built in a way that allows us to bring life into the world. We can carry a child within us as he grows and develops to the point where he can safely survive in the world. die of shame? NOT! Celebrate! Celebrate this moment is your life! Is your body the same as it was before? Of course, no! But by no means is your body unattractive! This is a beautiful time in your life and despite how you feel right this second, this will be over before you know it! Your body will mostly go back to the way it was before, and you will forget how strongly you could feel that little GIANT in your belly! You’ll forget how uncomfortable you were at night and how you couldn’t get from one commercial break to the next without going to the bathroom. Photograph this moment! It’s such a short period of time in your life, and it will be over before you know it! Commemorate the way you see. If you are not comfortable with stretch marks, so what!!! I’ll Photoshop them out of there! If you have insecurities about your body, face them because I can promise you that there will come a day when you will lie in bed at night and do your best to alleviate these moments through a daydream. This is a quick breakout moment in your life and the beginning of a beautiful lifelong relationship with the most special human being you will ever meet! Trust me, maternity photography is not for amateurs! You want a professional who knows about DISTORTION. You want someone who knows what mm lens to use for this, so you don’t get a picture that makes your belly look three times bigger than it really is, and who likes it to jump three dimensionally out of the picture. This is something that requires a sensitive eye and delicate vision! You want to look at these maternity photos fondly again!

Newborn photos are so important because it is the stage in which it escapes the fastest. You have about two weeks from their arrival to capture the essence that a newborn has. You can take these photos yourself. You can point the camera at them, get the angle you want, and shoot. But, when you hire a trained and experienced professional, your newborn photos will reach another level. You’ll be amazed at how differently a professional will “see” the subject. They are able to capture images that show textures, create feelings and have a mood… Those images will engage the senses, and in fact you will be able to remember the way your baby smells, you will remember the cooing or the facial expression vividly. It is amazing to see how a correctly exposed and framed image will change the result of the image.

Baby photos are very important because of milestones. You don’t count the age of a young child in years because a monumental amount of things change every month. Each of those milestones are photo-worthy moments! Baby photography is just as important as the baby book. In the baby book, you record how old your child is as he reaches his milestones, but the way they look at this stage seems to change weekly, if not daily. The first year of a child’s life is incredibly action-packed, and with a professional photographer, you can create a visual memory book that will immortalize what your child looked like when they learned to roll over, scoot, crawl, walk . , the way they couldn’t get one more drop of drool on their faces when they were teething, the face they make when they try a new food for the first time, their first steps, the first time they start wanting to brush theirs teeth, runs down the stairs, tries to escape from his crib, the list goes on and on! You can create a variety of artistic ways to display these memories. I can create a multi-frame visualization of these important moments, or create a scrapbook of important events that can be used in place of or with a baby book, etc. These moments are priceless, and with a professional photographer you can cherish these moments for a lifetime.

Children’s photos are exciting to photograph because of the element of surprise! You never know what you will find! Each child you photograph is unique from the child in the previous week’s session and from those you will meet the following week! Whether your child is shy or outgoing, athletic or intellectually engaged, or any imaginable combination, all children want the same thing: to feel loved and to have fun. Those things offer safety to all children. When I go to photograph children, I don’t shake their hands and say: “action”! I don’t expect them to just act. Children want to feel safe before they react well to an intimidatingly large camera in front of their faces. I’ll get down to their level and have a normal conversation with them. I don’t immediately act like they think I’m their friend, nor do I act like a clown. Children are incredibly intelligent and have a keen insight to determine if someone is being genuine and honest with them. I find that children feel condescending when you immediately start joking around and goofing around. Unless you’re dressed like a clown, you shouldn’t act like one! I only talk to the child first to get an idea of what moves, excites and motivates them… We can use those responses to improve the outcome of the photo shoot. If a kid’s hobby is boating on the nearby pond, why would you take them to the playground 20 minutes up the street to take photos of them on the monkey bars and pose in front of the fountain? Has no sense! The purpose behind a professional photo shoot is to capture the essence of who your child is at this particular stage in their life! If your child is interested in music, have him photographed learning to play an instrument, if he is athletic, photograph him in his uniform playing the sport of your choice, if he is artistic and messy, photograph him getting dirty and creating what you see. have art! My style of photography is not to pose a child in front of a beautiful background. I don’t like cookie cutter, same release as last style. Your son is special. Your child is unique. Your child is YOURS! Remember the things that make your child uniquely yours! Remember this phase of your life! Is that musical instrument you’re playing on now going to lead to something huge? Could they become a famous musician? Yes! And, if you have a professional photographer, you will have images with the ability to take you back in time, if only for a moment!
