The Wild Atlantic Way

It officially begins in Kinsale, County Cork and follows the road around the west coast and ends at Malin Head, County Donegal.

The Wild Atlantic Way is a huge draw for visiting Ireland as it covers some of Ireland’s top attractions including the Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry and Dingle. The best way to experience it is by renting a car for a couple of weeks to fully enjoy the trip with the luxury of taking your time and stopping whenever a photo opportunity presents itself.

County Cork is in the south west of Ireland, and this driving route starts at Kinsale and follows the N71 towards Baltimore, stopping at Clonakilty.

There are smaller routes to take from Wild Atlantic Way and highlights;

  • Ring of kerry

  • Slea head

  • Path of heaven

  • Beara’s Ring

Kinsale

A colorful town that is worth spending a couple of hours walking the little side roads and alleys. Being located on the coast offers fresh fish, check out the Fishy Fishy restaurant or their take out.

Nearby is the Charles Fort, where you can walk the coastal path from Kinsale to the fort via the Scilly Walk, a 6km round trip. The Charles Fort is a 17th century army with a star-shaped fort on the water’s edge.

Mizen head

Ireland’s southernmost point overlooking the Atlantic seascape with an iconic Mizen footbridge that you can cross.. Great cliff landscape.

Ring of kerry

The Ring of Kerry is a 179 km loop in southwestern County Kerry, a popular route for visitors to take on a tour bus or in their own car. It is commonly driven counterclockwise to avoid getting stuck behind a bus, an important note to take as you would like to see the beautiful views.

Skellig Ring and Isles

A detour from the Ring of Kerry Drive, an 18 km route overlooking the famous Skellig Michael Islands, which has recently been featured in the Star Wars movies. Visit Valentia Island for 360 viewpoints from the Geokaun Mountains.

Kylemore Abbey

Kylemore Abbey & Walled Garden is located in the beautiful grounds of a castle with a picturesque entrance. Located in County Galway in Connemara National Park.

Path of heaven

A small route with great panoramic views, this is an 11km tourist route that starts at Clifden in the Connemara region. Follow the signs to Sky Road for great views of the coastline, the old coast guard, the bays and more.

Slieve League

Actually, cliffs taller than the Cliffs of Moher and equally dramatic cliffs. This free cliff-top attraction is one of the tallest in Europe and worth visiting without the crowds of the Cliffs of Moher. Located in County Donegal.
