Why do cats knead? An explanation of evolutionary behavior

Have you ever observed your cat “walk” in one place, using alternate legs to press down while in a deep trance state? This is called “kneading” and there are several reasons that cats engage in this seemingly strange behavior. Some cats like to knead in layers, blankets, or beds, while others like to knead on their owners. My friend’s cat would climb onto his shoulder and begin to knead. He thought it was the cat’s way of rubbing his shoulder, but then he did some research and learned to understand the real reason cats knead.

Kneading essentially seems to walk in place or crush grapes with your feet. A cat will perform this unusual behavior for a number of reasons. One of the most interesting and compelling explanations for kneading is actually evolutionary in nature. The kittens will gently use their paws to knead their mother’s nipple to stimulate the flow of milk. This action is then associated with the positive, calming, and relaxing outcome of obtaining sustenance.

So a cat can go into a state of deep relaxation and trance. As the cat grows, it can knead any soft surface and, as it does so, enter the same “good place” that it experienced as a kitten. Therefore, you may hear her purring with joy as she kneads. Another explanation is that cats knead to prepare a soft surface on which to eventually settle. It also seems to suit them well and exercises their legs. However, if your cat still has sharp claws, the kneading exercise can be painful if you do it on your person.

Kneading is therapeutic for cats and they should be left alone while they perform this behavior. Your cat just wants to relax and unwind and if he is engaged in kneading on your shoulder or lap then he will feel more comfortable with you and that is always good.
