Buying frustration instead of Easter vacation? The trade is hoping for good sales

The upcoming Easter business gives retailers a glimmer of hope. When travel is impossible and celebrations are canceled, some of them could give their loved ones a nicer gift or – given the bleak winter weather – treat themselves to a spring dress.

Along with eggs and toys, sweets are the most popular gifts.
“Surveys show that this year 16 percent of Austrians are spending more on Easter gifts,” says trade chairman Rainer Trefelik. Austrians spend 200 to 220 million euros on Easter gifts. After candy and Easter eggs, toys are the most popular.
Little hope in the face of much greater fears that retail closings could also occur again. “Another lockdown would be a disaster,” says Trefelik. Since the unlock on February 8th, the shops have grown mixed up. The fashion and shoe industry in particular would have massive discounts …
