Puppy house training: choose between newspaper or box training methods to break your dog’s house

Living in a small space and having a new pet is challenging, obedience training, especially puppy house training, can be nerve-wracking for both you and the dog. Since he is still a puppy, he cannot control his bladder or bowels. I would still need to be trained by you. But since he lives in a small space or an apartment building, he can’t access dog parks and you may not always be around to take him outside. There are two options for house training puppies, newspaper training and crate training. Newspaper training is an ancient method of training to spread the newspaper where you want the dog to relieve himself. Crate training has become one of the most popular training methods because it also teaches your dog the bladder or bowel control skills that he will need in the future.

1. Spread out newspaper where you want your dog to poop and urinate. When you see his usual behavior of walking and sniffing the ground, take him to the newspaper section. There’s no need to talk, pet or cuddle while he’s holding him, just place him where he needs to be. The newspaper should have at least four layers, keep the fourth as a marker for the second run of newspaper. This puppy house training is an unpredictable situation for a while, but it’s important to be consistent and when you see his potty behavior, move on if he’s not on the spot, until he gets the idea.
2. Crate training, on the other hand, is based on a different reasoning, dogs in general are hygienic and don’t like their sleeping area to be littered with their own waste. Put the dog in a crate with enough space to sleep. But before you do, take him outside to his favorite potty spot and wait for the event to happen. Then put it in the box. Puppies between the ages of 8 to 10 weeks can hold the urge for 7 to 8 hours. Do not leave it unattended for long periods. Choose a cage that is suitable for him to lie down in and nothing else, choosing a larger cage can be a problem, you can dirty one side and leave the other side clean as his sleeping area; that defeats the purpose of teaching him to contain the urge to go to the bathroom. Bedtime is, of course, box time.

Two important rules to remember during puppy house training:

• If you didn’t catch him in the act, leave him, don’t yell at him or punish him.
• Give praise when it is due. This applies to any act of obedience on your dog’s part; praise and rewards should be given when he does a good deed.

There are no shortcuts in puppy house training. Persistence, patience and will are necessary for your pet to master itself successfully. Your time will be your valuable asset in this endeavor.
