Vegan Carnival in the Dominican Republic

February is a festive month in the Dominican Republic, especially in La Vega. Independence day is also celebrated on the 27th of this particular month and is also known as the month of Carnival in La Vega. The Vegan Carnival or vegan carnival is held every Sunday throughout the month of February. It is considered the best in the entire country and the rest of the Caribbean, where an estimated 500,000 people filled the streets.

February is also considered as the month when thousands of tourists visit La Vega to witness a unique festival that will surely entertain its spectators and participants. These are the activities that take place during the celebration:

* Opening Parade – This usually takes place a few days before the carnival. Participants would come together without masks or costumes. This opens the carnival.

*Concerts – Happens every Sunday. It usually takes place in the afternoon onwards.

*Miss Vegan Carnival Contest – A contest during the festival where the queen of carnival is chosen. Candidates will be judged on how they would represent themselves in the contest.

*Coronation of the King: A contest for male participants in which they will be judged and crowned the Carnival King of the year.

*February 27 – Independence Day in the Dominican Republic. In the morning a parade takes place in which colleges and universities march and dance through the streets.

*March 1 – End of the Vegan Carnival. Last minute parties and events usually take place on the last night of the month until the next morning.
