10 best methods to become a street fighter

Street fight. As soon as that phrase is mentioned, images of Jet Li, Jackie Chan, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Wesley Snipes, and others come to mind. On the big screen, street fights are brilliant displays of technique and power, with potential attackers always left in a miserable bunch at the end. Unfortunately, the real world doesn’t play out this way. Real street fights are usually confusing melee, with few effective or beautiful movements, and very few punches that actually land, none of which makes that “thudding” sound we have here at the movies. Below are 10 secrets about street fighting that will hopefully leave you better prepared to defend yourself or your loved ones if the unfortunate need ever arises:

  1. Never try to use the “round house” bangs you see actors use on TV and in movies; they will surely fail and throw you completely out of balance. Quick, short strokes with a tight fist (thumb out, not in) are much more effective.
  2. Getting hit in the face, unless it came from Mike Tyson, is not as painful as you might imagine, and unless your attacker manages to land in the right place, you will not be knocked out or knocked down. You probably won’t even feel the pain for the first few moments due to the adrenaline rush you are surely experiencing.
  3. Using any method at your disposal is not only acceptable, it is necessary. If you are fighting for your life, there is no time to worry about being accused of being “girly” for biting, pulling hair, or scratching. Any of these can deal enough damage to allow you to escape, the ultimate goal if you find yourself in a street fight.
  4. Street fights generally involve a lot of name calling, chest beating, fighting, and rolling on the ground. Being face to face and exchanging blows again only happens in the movies. Use your body weight or any of the more “feminine” tactics mentioned above to get yourself out of a tangle on the ground, and keep “garbage talk” to a minimum, if not zero.
  5. While one of the movie heroes mentioned above may not have to, if you find yourself in front of an attacker who is wielding a weapon, for example a knife or a gun, submit, plain and simple. Saving your life and looking for an opportunity to escape should be your only priorities.
  6. Learn to use the weapons that come naturally with your body. Cuffs for punches, elbows and forearms for face and torso punches, knees for groin and abdomen punches, feet for stomping hands, feet, head, whatever is available.
  7. A variation of the fist is to use the palm of the hand. Striking up on your attacker’s nose will almost certainly break him, and it can be worse. Use this technique only in the deadliest situations, as it can be deadly.
  8. Don’t forget another natural body weapon: your forehead. The forehead is quite hard and a quick, hard hit to your attacker’s nose will at least stun and possibly completely incapacitate them.
  9. Use your voice, the deeper and stronger the better. Yelling a rude order can temporarily freeze your attacker, which can give you precious moments to attack or escape.
  10. Use the heel of your foot, not your toe, as you can hurt yourself more than your attacker, to kick sensitive areas like the shins, insteps, and groin.

With these 10 secrets about street fighting, you will discover that you are better able to protect yourself and your loved ones. Just remember that the end goal is not to beat someone to a bloody pulp, it is to protect yourself and ultimately escape.
