Brita Water Filters – The Ugly Truth About Brita Water Filters

Brita water filters are the so-called “inexpensive alternative” to bottled and tap water. But are they really the cheapest alternative available? And perhaps more importantly, are they the best filtration system?

Don’t be fooled by the fact that Brita water filters are the ‘best selling’ purification products on the market. The only reason this is so true is because they are sold in virtually every store for rock-bottom prices. The really high costs come with buying a new filter every month.

First of all, what kind of quality can you expect from Brita water filters? Well, any type of pitcher and pass through filter has very limited performance, mainly due to the size of the filter. They are not effective at getting rid of many types of contaminants such as cysts, THMs (derivatives of chlorine), VOCs (volatile organic compounds), pesticides, herbicides and harmful solvents.

They also sell faucet filters. Brita water filters like this one definitely produce better quality water than the pour-over type. But they still fail to filter things like gasoline additives and VOCs, which include many types of harmful organic chemicals.

But I think the real question comes down to affordability. Brita water filters are supposed to be the cheapest systems available, and I assume this is true initially. But since the filter has to be replaced every month (3-4 times a month for pitchers!), the usage cost per gallon is quite high, around 20-25 cents per gallon.

For me, the choice was easy with a multi-stage water filtration system for my home. It’s amazing, but I got the highest rated system available, and it turned out that it was also the cheapest and most affordable! This is because they are sold directly from the factory and do not have additional surcharges.

I have a water filter in my kitchen faucet and even in all of our showers, which is a much bigger concern than drinking water, if you can believe it. This is because the steam from your shower contains all the harmful chemicals, and inhaling these chemicals makes them go DIRECTLY into your bloodstream.

And guess how much it costs to produce a gallon of pure, safe and healthy water using these systems? Nine hundred! That is all!
