How You Can Benefit From An Annual Hearing Test

Do you take your audience for granted? I know what I do. To be honest with you, it’s not something I think about too much, but I know I should. I also recently heard that I should get my hearing tested at least once a year; preferably at the same time that I have my annual medical check-up. So why don’t we both explore the wise reasons behind this thought?

Getting your hearing tested should be as routine as you turn a year older, and especially if you begin to experience some degree of hearing loss. Every time one is done, your audiologist will have a baseline comparison from year to year. This will simply reveal a progression in decreasing your loss, if any, and also allow you to come up with a beneficial plan of action.

There are some specific things that can be done to alter our loss progression. For one thing, if you live or work in a smoky or dusty environment, if you’re around noisy construction machinery, or even the volume of your music, all of these things can cause your loss to continue in a downward spiral. These are all items that can probably be controlled or eliminated quite easily. You may need to change your lifestyle, but not experiencing more losses will be worth it.

It is also true that all newborns are tested compulsorily and children of school age have an annual test. So, since you and I are likely to lose some of our hearing as we age, why shouldn’t we get an annual checkup? It is a truth that says that “47% of all adults over the age of 75 are hearing impaired.” I mean, that’s almost half a percentage!

It is also true that the sooner your hearing level is diagnosed, the more benefit you will get from a hearing aid if you choose to use it. The more your disability progresses, the less hearing aids will be able to help you hear well.

This is the greatest value of having a hearing test. Early detection improves hearing with the help of an aid.

I just “heard” the other day that one of the reasons people with severe hearing loss don’t adjust well to help is because they wait too long to receive it. Your ears get so used to hearing or not hearing differently, that they get used to no noise. Then, when they wear their hearing aids for the first time, they have difficulty adjusting to the new level of hearing and abandon them.

All this happens mainly because they wait too long to get a hearing test and their hearing level deteriorates rapidly.

I don’t want this to happen to me, and I bet you don’t either. Let’s agree to have a hearing test very soon so that we can continue enjoying a better quality of life every day.
