18 tips to keep in mind while preparing for an interview. You only get one chance to make a great first impression! Write them on your mirror, stick them on your fridge; do whatever it takes to remember these gems and you’ll have a great interview, every time!

RESEARCH the organization: history, size, products/services, market/customers, financial outlook

* DO NOT ask the interviewer to tell you about the company

Find out about the culture, including proper dress, community involvement, mission statement, etc.

* DO NOT show up at a bench dressed for a barbecue and do not show up at a dental office dressed for a funeral

DO bring a copy of your resume, list of references, paper and pen

* DO NOT have your cell phone on, your Bluetooth on, or bring anyone else with you

* DO NOT answer questions with questions except for clarification. For example, if the interviewer asks you what your 5-year goal is, DO NOT respond with “why do you want to know?” but feel free to ask if you are interested in learning about your personal 5-year goal, as well as your professional one. a

Know yourself. Learn about your skills, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, work ethic, career goals, and what you have to offer an employer. Take the time to write them down and review them daily.

* DO NOT expect potential employers to get all your skills and characteristics from your resume

KNOW your limits related to travel, salary and office hours

* DO NOT mislead an interviewer for a job you are not willing to do

EXPECT the unexpected and be prepared to take the blows

* DO NOT act offended or insulted if the interview schedule is not kept up or if there are multiple changes during the course of your interview (unless you have decided you do not want the position at all)

EAT a good meal before interviews so your body can focus on what’s most important: staying alert

* DO NOT go to an interview hungry or tired if you can help it DO remember to smile, make eye contact, and try really hard to remember your interviewers’ names (write them down; ask for their names again if you didn’t). catch it the first time)

* DO NOT expect interviewers to have read your resume recently or remember what it says

DO keep in mind that interviewing is a lot like dating; In this environment patience, compassion, understanding and limits are required.
