Simple Life Guide: Breaking Sugar Addiction

Sugar has become (according to many sources) the most common addictive food (drug) in the world. Sugar in any form weakens the health of body tissue and lowers immunity. Since microorganisms love simple sugars, the sweet diet suits them perfectly. Bacteria, fungi and parasites have a paradise to grow and thrive…

When sugar is consumed just as an occasional special treat, that doesn’t count as an addiction and can’t do much harm. Problems arise when sugar begins to replace healthy meals and nutritious foods. As a result of sugar abuse, many people suffer from nutritional deficiencies, hypoglycemia, and even “sugar diabetes.”

There are many theories about how to break sugar addiction. Studies show that B vitamins, vitamin C, zinc and chromium can help reduce sugar cravings. But since I am always looking for natural methods without any harmful side effects, I am happy to tell you about this one.

Barbara Flores in her book The big sunflower book claims that eating sunflower seeds instead of sugary snacks can help you break sugar addiction. You have nothing to lose by trying this theory out for yourself. Raw sunflower kernels are the most nutritious and roasted kernels are more flavorful (they have a nutty flavor).

A word of warning:

Half a cup of sunflower seeds has about 400 calories. Keep that in mind if you’re trying to lose weight.

ยท For people with high sodium levels, it is important to stick with unsalted seeds.

John Douglas, MD recommends sunflower seeds to many patients with cardiovascular problems or high blood pressure, and sometimes even to reduce allergic reactions, all with great success.

There is another interesting fact that I came across while researching sugar addiction. According to the traditional Chinese health system, the craving for sugar (sweet taste) is considered as a craving for female energy (yin), a craving for comfort and security. The need for spicy and salty foods, on the other hand, means a lack of masculine (yang) energy, strength.

With that said, it might be a good idea to take a closer look at our lives and find out what causes cravings, while munching on sunflower seeds…
